Owl Moon

Hoot hoot!

All about owls!

We recently finished exploring a beautiful book called Owl Moon by Jane Yolen and John Shoenherr. It's about the adventure had when a little girl goes owling with her father one late winter night. Here's some of what we did!

I bought two math and literacy units from Teachers Pay Teachers which helped us to learn all about owls. One of our favorite activities was creating a lunch box for a baby owl after learning what owls eat.

Here are the two units:

We learned about the various kinds of owls by using these owl 3-part cards. We learned the anatomy of an owl with these cards as well.

Owl Moon was also a great opportunity to talk about the difference between backyard and exotic birds. I set out TOOB Backyard Birds and TOOB Exotic Birds along with these bird cards so the kids could have fun matching the TOOB birds with the cards.

Looking at the eggs of various birds was interesting too with these cards.

Throughout the unit, I had some small sticks, moss and plastic eggs (from the dollar store!) sitting out so E and R could build and re-build nests.

We made owl finger puppets out of felt...

I gathered a handful of books on owls and other nocturnal animals from the library for us to page through...

but the best (and most disgusting!) part of the unit was dissecting an owl pellet! We got this pellet kit on Amazon (what can't you get on Amazon?!).

Here are a few other photos from our Owl Moon set-up...
