One of the biggest units we've done so far this year was on Magnetism and Electricity. Most of what we've studied over the past few months I've allowed my oldest, 6-year-old E, to guide. She's had idea after idea since the start of the school year about what she's wanted to learn about... so I've gone with it! Even when I've felt way out of my element, like I did with this unit.
Thank goodness for our favorite curriculum, Moving Beyond the Page! At the beginning of the year, we ordered the age 7-9 curriculum from Moving Beyond the Page for E, but we haven't touched it yet since she's had her own ambitions about what she wants to learn. So when she wanted to know all about electricity, I checked to see if Moving Beyond the Page covered the topic in later age groups, and sure enough, they do!
So here's what we used as curriculum for this topic. It includes a teacher's guide, student notebook and all the materials needed to perform the experiments. Because this curriculum is geared for kids ages 8-10, I needed to simplify the ideas (for both myself and for E!) here and there. So I also got these two resources from Teachers Pay Teachers and used them when I needed to:
Magnets
Electricity
With these three resources, we had more than enough to keep us interested, learning, laughing!
I happen to see this Green Science kit in a store during our unit, so I picked it up too.
Another great resource is actually a toy that my sister and brother-in-law gave to E for Christmas. You've probably heard of it, Snap Circuits. Now that she knows how electricity works, she especially loves to pull this from the toy shelf and experiment.
Have you studied magnetism and/or electricity with your kids? What did you use that you liked?
